Avif

This open, royalty-free image file format specification, known as AVIF, is utilized for storing images or image sequences. The compression is done with AV1 in the HEIF container format. Developed by the Alliance for Open Media, it had its initial release in February 2019. It competes with HEIC, which uses the same container format but employs HEVC for compression.
