Enteric coating

A polymer barrier applied to oral medications to prevent their dissolution or disintegration in the acidic environment of the stomach. This coating ensures that the medication remains intact until it reaches the more neutral or alkaline pH of the small intestine, thereby protecting the drug from stomach acid and the stomach lining from potentially irritating drugs. Enteric coatings are particularly beneficial for medications that can be degraded by stomach acid or cause stomach irritation, and for targeting drug release to the intestine.
