Loading dose

In pharmacology, an initial higher dose of a drug, known as a loading dose, is often administered at the onset of treatment. This method is particularly beneficial for drugs with a long systemic half-life, as it allows for rapid attainment of therapeutic drug concentrations or an immediate clinical response. Following this, a lower maintenance dose is typically used to sustain the desired drug levels in the body.
