Microplastics

These are tiny fragments of plastic, typically smaller than 5mm, that are a major environmental issue. Their inability to decompose readily means they can persist in the environment for centuries, causing widespread harm to wildlife, especially marine organisms. There is also a potential risk of these particles entering the human food chain.
