General Lead Generation Statistics
In 2026, marketers are generating higher-quality leads better than ever before.
55.7% of marketers in HubSpot’s survey say generating leads is easier today than a decade ago (HubSpot).
Monthly Google searches for “lead generation”.
On top of that, an outstanding 93.8% feel their lead quality has improved over the past year.
This improvement isn’t limited to lead quality. 74.5% of marketers also say that their lead volume has increased at least somewhat in the last 12 months.
However, for 30% of marketers, generating leads is still a top challenge.
That makes sense. If you’re struggling to generate leads, it’s a problem that overshadows other challenges, considering that 40% of marketers prioritize lead quality and MQLs higher than any other KPI (HubSpot).
It’s the first time in 5 years that the average cost of Google ads per lead has gone down, from $70.11 in 2025 to $66.69 in 2026 (WordStream).
One possible reason for the first ad cost drop in years is the use of AI-driven settings for ad optimization on platforms like Google. With AI taking control of optimization, it’s easier to generate leads at a lower cost.
Cost per lead (CPL), as always, swings wildly across industries. In 2026, Arts and Entertainment has the lowest CPL at $26.84 in Google and Microsoft ads.
The most expensive industry in terms of CPL is Attorneys and Legal Services, with a CPL of $131.63.
That’s a difference of $104.79 between the lowest and highest CPLs across industries.
For many organizations, CRM quality is a huge challenge.
According to Validity, 62% of organizations reported losing revenue due to poor CRM data in 2026.
Almost 33% of teams said they spend 6+ hours every week fixing data in CRMs, losing time on other growth-driving tasks.
AI is playing a greater role in guiding marketing decisions without human oversight. But this development poses both risks and benefits.
Once again, lack of quality CRM data is the root cause of the major risk challenging the reliability of AI-led decision-making. After all, even the most consistent and well-reasoned AI answer depends on the accuracy of its input parameters.
Only 21% feel their CRM data is very well prepared to support AI.
Outbound lead generation continues to hold a place in 2026.
Even though 86% of the calls from unknown numbers go unanswered, cold-calling is far from an ineffectual strategy.
According to Cognism, the cold-call success rate has crept up slightly from 2.3% the year before to 2.7% today. Additionally, it’s easier to reach prospects, taking an average of 1.55 attempts as opposed to 2.9 from before.
Content Lead Generation Statistics
For many brands, content marketing is the first step in lead generation — especially when directed toward audiences in the early stages of the buyer’s journey. Here’s how marketers are finding leads with content in 2026.
Get More Search Traffic
Use trending keywords to create content your audience craves.
Video marketing is on the rise.
85% of video marketers say it has helped them generate leads, indicating a very high success rate (Wyzowl).A
According to HubSpot, 48.6% of marketers rate short-form video as the best content format for generating ROI in 2026.
The second-best format cited by 28.6% of marketers is long-form video.
Thought leadership content is another major trend that's continuing its momentum since the past several years.
In B2B, 96% of marketers create thought leadership content (CMI).
As much as 63% measure thought leadership outcomes in terms of KPIs like leads and pipeline influence.
When asked where marketers publish thought leadership content, LinkedIn was mentioned by 76%.
54% cited email newsletters and 52% mentioned speaking events or webinars, coming in at 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Affiliate and partner marketing provide the highest lead generation ROI (Affiliate Summit)
46% of respondents in the 2025 study named affiliate and partner marketing as one of the channels to provide the highest ROI in terms of lead generation efforts. That was followed by paid advertising (43%) and email marketing (34%).
More than half of businesses allocate at least 40% of their digital marketing budget to lead generation (Affiliate Summit)
28% of organizations report spending 60% or more of the digital marketing budget on lead generation. Nobody reports spending below 10%.
The buying journey is becoming increasingly compressed, leaving little time for vendors to influence decisions and sway buyers.
94% of buying groups say they have an ordered shortlist already in their mind when they make first contact with a vendor (6sense).
When they do contact a vendor, 77% of buying groups pick the top preference they already had on their shortlist.
The only reliable way for brands to appeal to buyers is by having a strong enough brand presence that puts them top of mind before a buyer prepares a shortlist.
Email Lead Generation Statistics
Email has long held a key place in lead generation and nurturing, and it continues to be as relevant as ever in 2026.
The average email open rate is 20.73% based on data from 2025, after excluding automatic opens from Apple’s Mail Privacy Protection (MPP).
The open rate jumps to 33.87% when MPP is also counted.
There’s significant variance in open rates between industries.
Emails from E-commerce and retail have the worst open rates at about 16%.
Government and Public Administration emails see the highest open rates at 34.19%, followed by nonprofit & NGOs at 27.03%.
The difference makes sense. Emails from government usually contain important information that directly concerns the recipient.
NGOs send details about causes that are close to the recipient’s heart, so they’re also opened more frequently than most other kinds of emails.
All that aside, obsessing over open rates is no longer worth it. With Apple’s MPP skewing open rates, it’s an unreliable metric.
It’s likely to get even less reliable as other mailing services join Apple in introducing similar privacy-protection technologies.
Instead of open rates, clicks might be the gold standard for measuring email performance.
According to MailerLite, click rates have remained largely stable, from 2% in 2024 to 2.09% in 2025, based on the latest data available.
The average click-to-open rate has improved a bit more significantly, from 5.63% to 6.81%.
On the flip side, unsubscribe rates are also on the rise, increasing from 0.08% to 0.22%.
This is largely attributed to easier unsubscribe options introduced by Google.
Automated emails hold an important place in lead nurturing and conversion.
According to Omnisend, automated emails converted at 1.49% per latest data.
or campaign emails, the average conversion rate was 0.08%.
Based on revenue, automated emails stand well clear of campaign emails, earning $3.41 per email sent as opposed to $0.155 for campaigns.
Social Media Lead Generation Statistics
Social media has grown to 5.79 billion user identities, as per the latest data from April 2026 (Data Reportal).
That’s around 294 million more than a year earlier.
Note: User identities don’t necessarily point to unique individuals since the same person can have multiple social media accounts.
Monthly Google searches for “social media marketing” are up 165% over the past 5 years.
62% say lead generation is a major benefit of social media, ranking 3rd behind increased exposure and traffic (Social Media Examiner).
Almost 60% of social media marketers make brand awareness their top priority. It’s a trend that’s shot up twice as high since the past year (HubSpot).
Social media dominates marketers’ list of most impactful channels.
Paid social was cited by 25.9% of marketers, organic social by 23.5%, and social shopping by 22.7%.
Paid social is also the second-biggest area for increased investment for 37.4% of the marketers in HubSpot’s survey.
Marketers are pouring more budget into social media, but mainly as a tool for brand awareness rather than lead generation.
A brand with a stronger presence across social media is more visible to AI tools. So brands may be looking to generate leads from AI by focusing on winning mentions and top rankings in generated answers first.
73% of social users say they will move to a competitor if a brand doesn’t respond on social (Sprout Social).
Almost 75% expect a response within 24 hours before turning to a competitor.
Responsiveness on social media is an important competitive advantage. Take too long to answer, and you will most likely lose a lead to a more responsive rival.
Lead Nurturing and Conversion Statistics
Sourcing and qualifying leads is a top marketing goal, but it’s only half the battle. Organizations need to nurture leads to take them from “interested” to “ready-to-buy.”
The median B2B company using instant scheduling converts 62% of qualified form submissions into booked meetings (RevenueHero).
Top performers reach as high as 78% in turning form fills into booked meetings.
This is in line with another report from Chili Piper from 2025, which puts the number of qualified submissions that book meetings with instant scheduling at 66.7% compared to 30% without scheduling features.
Phone calls are still relevant in certain industries.
Legal and professional services industries account for 56.3% and 52.6% of conversions, respectively (Ruler).
Other industries like Real Estate and Travel also see a share of almost 30% in conversions via phone calls, which isn’t an insignificant number despite the dominance of web forms.
That said, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that forms remain the primary tools for lead conversions in most industries, such as Marketing and Advertising (95.1%), and Education (90.6%).
For many marketers, cold outreach is still a viable strategy, but few have the time and resources to perform outreach at scale.
48% say they lack the bandwidth for adequate cold outreach (Salesforce).
This is despite the fact that sales reps spend almost one full day every week on prospecting.
It’s just the kind of bottleneck that AI agents are well-suited to break down. About 54% of sellers state that they use AI agents, and it’s something being planned by almost 90%.
With increased AI adoption, sales reps are likely to find it easier to reclaim time for building relationships and nurturing leads.
Wrap Up
For all kinds of businesses, generating new leads every month is the key to future growth and success. And while some marketers struggle with lead generation, they almost all agree that it’s a huge part of their overall strategy.
In 2026, marketers are combining video, email, and social to create lead-generating ecosystems to send ready-to-buy prospects to sales teams. It’s the marketers who can best track and adjust their strategies who will find the most success.
