The biggest change in the last three years has been a drift in audience profile toward the 25-34 category. Some early adopters will have simply aged beyond the 18-24 demographic, but the platform has also widened its user base to encompass a greater spread of young adults.
The social media platform’s appeal to a young audience has taken TikTok level with Instagram in terms of popularity among Gen Z users.

How to Track Popular TikTok Content
With a fairly even gender split and a 2-billion strong user base that spans Gen Alpha, Gen Z and Millennials, TikTok has now become an essential marketing channel.
Where TikTok once might have been perceived as only for "young" brands, ignoring the platform now is leaving almost a third of the online population on the table.
Obviously, there's lots of platform overlap. But TikTok says that 1 in 4 of its users cannot be found on other platforms.
And in any case, TikTok is home to highly engaged users. So you need to be able to use it effectively.
Tools like TikTok Insights can show you exactly what's trending upward on TikTok, allowing you to jump on audience trends before they peak.
The tool from Exploding Topics shows you the top TikTok topics by growth in views over the last 30 days. You can also view the last 7 days for hyper-fresh trends, and you can change the filter to look at total views, total posts, or growth in posts.
That gives you a great general view of what audiences are interacting with on TikTok. But if you're in a specific niche, you can really hone in on what's resonating with your target market.
You can view trending TikTok topics within 18 curated categories (education, fitness, health etc). And you can go hyper-specialized by searching for hashtags, e.g. "#KBeauty".
You can then click into any topic of interest to see total posts, total views, total likes, and a selection of top-performing TikToks. You'll even get a useful visualization of related hashtags.

TikTok Users by Region
Around 20.56% of all TikTok visits come from the US as of November 2025. That’s more than 2x more visits from the US than from any other nation.
That underlines the significance of a potential TikTok ban in the US. Another Chinese app, RedNote, had a brief surge in popularity as users looked for alternatives to TikTok.
Here are the top five nations by proportion of TikTok visits as of November 2025:
-
US – 20.56% (418.44 million visits)
-
Brazil – 8.87% (180.51 million visits)
-
Indonesia – 4.22% (85.89 million visits)
-
Mexico – 3.44% (70.09 million visits)
-
Spain – 3.21% (65.39 million visits)

What's Happening With the TikTok Ban?
We've seen that the US is a massive market for TikTok. So the looming threat of a ban is highly significant.
It wouldn't be unheard of. Social media bans are novel in the US, but more common worldwide; TikTok itself is already banned in India, Iran, Nepal, and Somalia, and only its local version (Douyin) works in China.
Facebook is banned in Russia, Instagram is banned in Pakistan, and YouTube is banned in China.
Even so, it would be wrong to underplay the significance of a potential TikTok ban in the US. The country does not currently ban any major social networks, and it would be a big blow for the app's continued growth.
TikTok briefly went "dark" in January, before a deal was agreed to extend the deadline for ByteDance to sell. The can has since been repeatedly kicked down the road: after a fourth extension, yet another deadline falls in December 2025.
Donald Trump has said that a deal is "done", but neither ByteDance nor the Chinese government have publicly confirmed it.
Key Takeaways
It’s fair to say that TikTok’s global appeal has permeated several age groups and regions.
Creators and users still skew young, although the average user is getting steadily older.
The only question is whether the app's popularity will continue to grow as TikTok faces an uncertain future in the US.
