Originating in the mid-to-late 2000s in France and Western Europe, this electronic music microgenre is heavily influenced by the soundtracks of 1980s action, science-fiction, and horror films. It also incorporates elements from the decade's art and video games. Known by several names including Outrun, Retrowave, and Future Synth, it blends various stylistic origins such as electronic, 1980s film soundtracks, electro, Eurodisco, French house, video game music, Italo disco, chiptune, and synth-pop.
