According to Netcraft's survey, September saw an increase of 11.2 million sites compared to August. Based on 2024 data, 48.6 million new websites have been created this year. That equals approximately 177,372 websites per day.

However, it wasn't until 1994 that websites became available to the general public. This was when noticeable growth in the number of websites on the internet began.

Notably, the number of websites has declined since 2020 because of the shift to mobile apps, the consolidation of web services, and the change in how websites are tracked today.

Meanwhile, .net was the second most popular, with 13.0 million registrations. These two account for 72.6% of total domain registrations.

When accounting for all domains currently on the internet, the figures look a little different. The most popular top-level domain is .com at 44.4%, followed by .org at 4.2%.

The Internet is made up of websites in many different categories, including e-commerce stores, blogs, business websites, news sites, social media platforms, and dating. Other categories include online gambling, dating, and pornographic websites.

However, neither of these website types is even close to being the most popular. Today, there are more than 600 million blog websites on the internet. That makes up 53.6% of the entire internet.
