OpenAI's annualized revenue was about $50 billion in October 2026, according to Axios. OpenAI made $13.07 billion in revenue in 2025, according to leaked audited accounts reported by Fortune.

As of October 2026, OpenAI is valued at $852 billion, and it's in talks to raise new money at about $1.4 trillion.

OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, is still losing billions of dollars a quarter. And it's preparing for an IPO, which Sam Altman says won't happen until 2027 at the earliest.

In this article, we'll break down OpenAI's revenue, losses, valuation, funding and users, and what the numbers mean for investors.

How Much Revenue Does OpenAI Make?

OpenAI's annualized revenue run rate was about $50 billion in October 2026. Its booked revenue for 2025 was $13.07 billion.

OpenAI usually shares its growth as a run rate. A run rate is current revenue projected over a full year, so it shows momentum rather than revenue already earned.

Bar chart of OpenAI's annualized revenue run rate, end of 2024 to September 2026

OpenAI's run rate passed $20 billion by the end of 2025, according to OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar, as reported by Reuters. It topped $25 billion at the end of February 2026, according to The Information.

OpenAI's growth then sped up. Its run rate passed $40 billion over the summer, according to Bloomberg, and was about $50 billion in October, according to Axios.

Some reports in September put OpenAI's run rate at nearly $70 billion. That figure was an estimate prepared for investors using Anthropic's accounting method, which counts the full value of sales made through cloud partners. OpenAI counts only its own share of some partner sales.

Here's how OpenAI's run-rate revenue has grown, from the end of 2024 to October 2026:

DateRun-Rate Revenue
End of 2024~$6 billion
June 2025$10 billion
End of 2025$20 billion+
End of February 2026$25 billion+
Summer 2026$40 billion+
October 2026~$50 billion

For investors, the run rate shows momentum, not booked revenue. OpenAI's run rate at the end of 2025 (more than $20 billion) was well above the revenue it booked that year ($13.07 billion).

What Was OpenAI's Revenue in 2025 and 2026?

OpenAI made $13.07 billion in revenue in 2025, according to leaked audited accounts first published by Ed Zitron and reported by Fortune. That's about 3.5x its 2024 revenue of $3.7 billion.

OpenAI's quarterly revenue is still climbing. OpenAI made $5.7 billion in Q1 2026 and $6.7 billion in Q2 2026, according to The Wall Street Journal. That's growth of 18% from one quarter to the next.

PeriodOpenAI Revenue
2024$3.7 billion
2025$13.07 billion
Q1 2026$5.7 billion
Q2 2026$6.7 billion

OpenAI expects to make about $36 billion in revenue in 2026, according to a company presentation seen by the Financial Times. That would be nearly 3x its 2025 revenue.

Where Does OpenAI's Revenue Come From?

Businesses are now OpenAI's biggest source of revenue. Enterprise customers made up more than 40% of OpenAI's revenue in March 2026, up from 30% a year earlier, according to OpenAI. By August 2026, enterprise revenue had overtaken consumer revenue, CFO Sarah Friar told investors, according to CNBC.

Consumer subscriptions are the other big stream. ChatGPT had 50 million paying subscribers in February 2026, according to TechCrunch.

Advertising is the newest source of revenue. ChatGPT ads launched in the US in February 2026, and reached a $1 billion annualized run rate in less than 200 days, according to OpenAI, as reported by MediaPost.

For investors, ads and enterprise sales matter because they spread OpenAI's revenue beyond consumer subscriptions.

Is OpenAI Profitable?

OpenAI is not profitable. OpenAI made an operating loss of $20.92 billion in 2025, up from $8.78 billion in 2024, according to leaked audited accounts reported by Fortune.

OpenAI's losses are shrinking compared with its sales. OpenAI spent $1.60 for every $1 of revenue in 2025, down from $2.37 in 2024, according to Fortune.

OpenAI's quarterly losses are still growing. Its operating loss, including stock-based pay, was $12.3 billion in Q2 2026, up from $9.3 billion in Q1, according to The Wall Street Journal.

OpenAI expects negative free cash flow of $278 billion from 2026 to 2030, according to the Financial Times. Over the same period, OpenAI expects to spend about $856 billion on computing power and infrastructure.

For investors, compute spending is the figure to watch. OpenAI's plan depends on revenue growing fast enough to pay for it.

What Is OpenAI's Valuation?

As of October 2026, OpenAI is valued at $852 billion, following its $122 billion funding round in March 2026.

Bar chart of OpenAI's valuation, March 2025 to March 2026

OpenAI's valuation is up from $300 billion in March 2025, according to CNBC. That's nearly 3x in a year.

OpenAI is now in talks to raise $30 billion or more at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion, before the new money, according to Bloomberg.

Here's how OpenAI's valuation has grown, from March 2025 to August 2026:

Employee share saleOctober 2025$6.6 billion$500 billionThrive, SoftBank, Dragoneer, MGX, T. Rowe Price

OpenAI's biggest backers include SoftBank, Amazon, Nvidia and Microsoft.

Microsoft held a stake of roughly 27% after OpenAI's restructuring in October 2025, according to Microsoft. That was before the March 2026 round.

When Will OpenAI Go Public?

OpenAI announced in June 2026 that it had confidentially submitted a draft IPO filing to the SEC, according to OpenAI. In September 2026, CEO Sam Altman ruled out going public in 2026, according to Bloomberg.

OpenAI's $852 billion valuation is about 17x its annualized revenue of about $50 billion. A $1.4 trillion valuation would be about 28x.

How Many People Use ChatGPT?

ChatGPT had 1.2 billion weekly users in September 2026, according to OpenAI.

That's up from 900 million weekly users in February 2026, according to TechCrunch, and 800 million in October 2025, according to TechCrunch.

For investors, the gap between users and payers is the opportunity. In February 2026, OpenAI had 50 million paying subscribers, against 900 million weekly users.

How Does OpenAI Compare With Anthropic?

Anthropic's preliminary Q2 2026 revenue (more than $11.5 billion) was ahead of OpenAI's ($6.7 billion). According to The Wall Street Journal, it was the first time Anthropic's quarterly revenue topped OpenAI's.

Run-rate figures are hard to compare, because the two companies count revenue from cloud partners differently. Anthropic counts the full amount a customer pays through a cloud provider, then lists the provider's share as a cost. OpenAI counts only its own share of some partner sales.

OpenAI's annualized revenue was about $50 billion in October 2026, according to Axios. Anthropic's was $65 billion at the end of July, according to CNBC.

Here's how the two AI companies compare:

MetricOpenAIAnthropic
Q2 2026 revenue$6.7 billion$11.5 billion+ (preliminary)
Latest run rate~$50 billion (October 2026)$65 billion (end of July 2026)
2025 revenue$13.07 billion~$4.6 billion
Latest private valuation$852 billion (March 2026)$965 billion (May 2026)
Website visits (June 2026)5.32 billion (chatgpt.com)968 million (claude.ai)

OpenAI and Anthropic count cloud partner sales differently, so their run rates aren't a like-for-like comparison.

Chatgpt.com gets about 5.5x as many website visits as claude.ai. Website visits mostly reflect consumer use, though. Businesses now make up most of OpenAI's revenue, according to CNBC.

Searches for "Anthropic" grew much faster than searches for "OpenAI" over two years, from a far smaller base.
