While ChatGPT is still the clear leader, Gemini and Claude are growing much faster.

And different trackers give very different figures, depending on whether they count visits, prompts or referral clicks.

In this article, we'll break down AI chatbot market share by website visits, prompts and referrals, plus LLM market share for businesses and AI search's share compared with Google based on Semrush data.

We added up visits to the 9 biggest AI chatbot websites in Semrush Traffic Analytics. Together, they received 8.21 billion visits in June 2026, up 41.5% from 5.80 billion in June 2025.

Here's a breakdown of AI chatbot market share by website visits in June 2026:

Although ChatGPT has the biggest audience, it's a mistake to focus on ChatGPT exclusively for visibility optimization. You'd be missing about a third of the AI chatbot visits if you aren't analyzing your visibility on other LLMs and optimization for them.

Although ChatGPT's visits still grew 12.8% over that time, but rivals grew much faster, thereby capturing some of the share that was previously hogged by ChatGPT.

Why Do AI Chatbot Market Share Figures Differ?

AI chatbot market share figures differ because each tracker measures something different.

ChatGPT's share ranges from 50% of prompts to 80.5% of referral clicks, depending on the measure.

Here's a breakdown of AI chatbot market share by tracker and measure:

Comscore found that ChatGPT's share of AI prompt volume fell from 70% to 50% between January and June 2026. Gemini's rose from 17% to 30%, and Claude's from 2% to 11%.

Statcounter counts page views that arrive at websites from a chatbot link. ChatGPT had 80.5% of these AI chatbot referrals worldwide in September 2026. Gemini had 10.9%, Perplexity 5.9% and Copilot 1.8%.

Claude's referral share fell from 2.5% in August to 0.95% in September 2026.

The referral figures are an important metric for SEOs concerned with driving website traffic. On the other hand, the visits and prompt figures show where your audience asks questions, even when they don't click through. These platforms remain important for visibility and earning recommendations in AI platforms.

What Is the LLM Market Share for Businesses?

Menlo surveyed 495 US enterprise AI decision-makers in November 2025. The survey revealed how businesses are adopting different LLMs.

According to the report, Anthropic leads on two measures of business LLM use. Anthropic had an estimated 40% of enterprise LLM API spend in 20252, ahead of OpenAI at 27% and Google at 21%.

In addition, Anthropic's share rose from 12% in 2023 and 24% in 2024, whereas OpenAI's fell from 50% in 2023.

AI referrals are small but growing fast. A Semrush study found that outbound referral traffic from ChatGPT to other websites grew 206% in 2025.

Adobe, too, expects AI traffic to US retail sites to rise 130% year over year in the 2026 holiday season.

It's clear that Google search is still the biggest traffic source and will continue to remain one in the foreseeable future. That said, AI answers now appear inside Google too.
